Christine Yiting Wang (b. 1987) is American born Chinese who had B.F.A. education in Austin, Texas and M.F.A. ceramic degree from Kyoto City University of Arts. She moved back to her hometown, Taipei Taiwan, after she graduated from Kyoto and continuing working as exhibition curator and as an artist.
Wang worked in a private gallery as exhibition curator for three years and planed several group and solo exhibition for Taiwanese, Japanese and American ceramic/ glass/ craft material artists. As she worked in the gallery, she continues absorbing art-related knowledge and create ceramic arts while she is off work. Spring of 2018, she quite the gallery position and became a full time artist.
During year 2018 and 2019 she continues got accepted into competition finalist and received several awards from Taiwan and Japan with her newest series of work “Rebirth from the fossil specimens.”
Wang was inspired by several amazing Japanese ceramists for example NISHIDA Jun and INAZAKI Eriko when she studied in Japan. She focus on her series of work that she had been making since Master degree in Japan, which the main concept is focus on the decorative techniques and natural beauty of the ceramic material. She uses the process of ceramics making to simulate the minerals and crystals replacement in order to create her own original biomass texture and fossils. Wang enjoys to watch the traces of flame and the flow of crystal glaze which naturally happened during firing process.
In the series of “Rebirth from the fossil specimens- The Abandoned” , the maim concept is a fantasy wondering of if the industrial production was buried underground for hundred years, will itself rebirth as a creature or replaced by minerals like animal wreckage or plantation. Or the industrial wares will even evolve and grow into a new biological species.
王裔婷(Christine Yiting Wang,1987)出生於美國,畢業於美國德克薩斯州奧斯汀藝術學士(B.F.A. Studio Arts) 以及京都市立藝術大學陶瓷碩士(M.F.A. Ceramic Arts)。從京都畢業後,她回到家鄉台北,繼續在藝術領域中以策展人和藝術家身分活動。
王在一家私人畫廊擔任策展人三年,並為台灣、日本和美國的陶瓷/玻璃/工藝藝術家策劃了多個聯展及個展。當她在畫廊工作時,她同時繼續吸收與藝術有關的知識,並在工作外創作。 2018年春季,她離開畫廊開始專注於全職藝術創作。
在2018年和2019年間,她繼續入圍比賽與決賽,並憑藉其最新系列作品「被遺棄的重生化石」系列獲得2018苗栗陶藝第三名、2019日本有田燒國際陶藝獎的「國際交流獎」。同系列並於2020年入選61 屆義大利法恩扎當代國際陶藝雙年展。
2019年她以陶瓷仿擬自然生態並探討海洋環保的「殞落中的重生化石」系列獲得台灣青年陶藝獎的首獎(四位首獎者)、並且2021年以一隻160公分長的殘骸形式的陶瓷海豚探討海洋環保並獲得2021台灣陶藝獎的首獎。
王在日本留學時受到了許多精緻的日本陶藝家堀香子、稲崎栄利子等前輩的啟發。於日本碩士求學期間琢磨自己的個人風格,其主概念是專注於陶土的裝飾技術和原料的自然美感。她利用陶瓷製作過程來模擬礦物和晶體的替換,以創建自己的原始生物質感的化石為主要研究目標。 她喜歡觀看在燒製過程中自然發生的火焰痕跡和水晶釉的流動,利用這些化學及物理的天然變化融入自己雙手創作的抽象有機體,力求特色性的美學表現。
私は古い時代に生息していた動植物の遺骸の化石を発見するときの魅力とやきものの成形課程と創作の可能性の関係を探りながら抽象造形の作品を制作していく。
化石とやきものは両方溶かす物と色んな化学元素が高い温度に反応して、自然な動きや流れなどの表情を持つ。
化石は植物と動物の残骸が温度や圧力の変化で元の物体が鉱物や結晶に換わって何万年前から、今まで保存され出来たものである。やきものは化石と鉱物や成分は基本的に同じであるが可塑性を持つため様々な成形ができる可能性を持つ素材で、高い温度で焼成して、具体的な形を創造して、石のように今から長時間形を保つことができる物である。
私は過去に存在した、封印された生物の化石を作りたいわけではなく、やきものの塊の封印を破り、その奥に新たな生命力や生まれ変わって成長が続くことを予感させる作品を作りたい
